EVAGELISMOS THEOTOKOU
Drama
A new challenge for us, mainly due to the fact, that in the process of searching how and why it was built, we discovered that it was part of the adjacent barracks. We were informed by the responsible priest, father Angelos, that it was built for the needs of the military and the church of the unit.
Initially it was quite small and despite being stone-built, it followed a low-rise approach, something customary at the time for neighborhood parishes or temples that were remote from the center.
The priest who took over, tried to renovate both the interior and the exterior of the temple, adding new sections and trying to unify the whole ensemble according to the architectural possibilities.
Our effort here is to follow a traditional way in the canonization.
The peculiarity of this church is that it has a wooden roof, which the priest renovated in a way that strengthens the Macedonian character of the building. So, we had to limit the iconography to the side walls and the aisle, which was added later. The iconography is relatively simple but comprehensive at the same time.
We also paid attention to the sanctuary in order to beautify it, in an effort to upgrade the importance of the area of the Sanctuary.
We consider that the result is quite reinforcing in terms of the character of the temple and that it added homogeneity to the temple, since the various parts had to become one united whole.
We still work at this church, because the parish wishes to keep the iconography project at a slow but steady pace.
